HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY RAISES £4,000 FOR THE VICTIMS
OF THE HAITI EARTHQUAKE

HEART OF ENGLAND CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY RAISES £4,000 FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE HAITI EARTHQUAKEThe Heart of England Co-operative Society and its customers have helped raise £4,000 for the victims of the Haiti Earthquake.

The money was raised with the help of customers at the Society's 55-strong network of Food, Non-Food and Funeral branches in Coventry, Warwickshire, south Leicestershire and Northamptonshire.

The Society, the largest independent retailer in the region, teamed up with the Red Cross and the Co-operatives UK via the International Co-operative Alliance in February in a bid to raise as much money possible to help the people of Haiti.

In that time in-store collections raised £1,930.17. The Society's Board of Directors agreed to enhance the total to £2,069.83 making a grand total of £4,000.

The earthquake struck on January 12th. Measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale it killed more than 170,000 people and affected three million lives. Every penny from the appeal is being put towards feeding the millions who have been left hurt, homeless and hungry from the disaster.

Ali Kurji, Chief Executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society, said: "Everyone at the Society was shocked and saddened by the pictures being beamed across the world in the aftermath of the earthquake and we were only too pleased to do what we could to support this appeal. Our staff, members and customers have given so generously since we launched the fundraiser and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made a contribution."
